    Slide Show Gadget Stopped Working

I have Windows Vista Business and my slide show sidebar gadget stopped
working. I can uninstall and reinstall it just fine via the sidebar tool in
Control Panel. I can also get the gadget on and off the sidebar but when I go
into options to point it to my pictures, everything is blank. I cannot change
duration, transition, folder, anything. Please let me know what I can do.

there are several dots out to the right of the ARROW after Sample Pictures, this is the BROWSE function, once you point to a picture folder the options come up.

Re: Slide Show Gadget Stopped Working

Let me clarify my level of knowledge. I searched through the registry
looking for entries to see if I could manually type in some values to force
it to work once but could not find a registry entry for the Slide Show that
looked like I could edit it to achieve my ends. I am well aware of the
browse function and how the directory tree works. If someone knows of a way
to do a full uninstall and a clean install of the slide show that would be
great. The sample pictures are being displayed but I cannot change the
directory it is looking in and cannot even change the display options for the
sample pictures. Any help would be apreciated.

as I said, the .... activates the browse function allowing you to change the location where the pictures are located.

it has to be a FOLDER not a single picture.
if it is not working for you, then maybe copy the gadget from someone else's computer.
unless in your attempts to FIX the registry you have managed to corrupt it.

Again, thanks for assuming that I don't know how to use simple software and
a directory browsing feature. If you had checked the gadget options you would
see that you cannot point to a single picture, it only lets you select
folders. And though the registry might be a mysterious wonder to some
people, other people can navigate around it to do repairs to various pieces
of software. But, like I said in my previous post, because I did not find a
registry entry that looked like a way to fix the problem I didn't actually
change anything. Now if someone helpful could reply to this post I would
apreciate it. I can do without further sarcasm and condescension.

This may not fix your problem - but it might. I had exactly the same problem. Windows slideshow gadget only showed the placeholder. going into its tools everything was blank. I could select a photo directory using the ... button, but still nothing appeared. I went into Windows registry and found the the 'my pictures' key was linked to an old drive which no longer existed. I corrected this key and low and behold the slideshow worked again. I am not technically knowledgeable so don't know if this will cure all your problems, but it might.

Type regedit.exe in your run command on the start button, then go to hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\usershellfolders

Then double click on the entry you want to change and change it (if its faulty)

Have a look at this page for clues how to do this:
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/usershellfolders.htm.

I know its an XP forum not a vista forum but the principles appear to be the same. NB - don't attempt to do anything with the registry if you are a complete new comer! Or unless you are totally desperate! Good luck. Paul

Just to clarify - the last post was to everybody who is in this thread, and anybody viewing this who is not a member, not just to mikeyhsd who clearly is not a complete beginner! Sorry!
